Can an STI go away on its own?

STIs are unlikely to go away without treatment. For certain infections like trichomoniasis, the infection may cure itself in rare cases, but you risk passing the infection on to someone else if you're not treated.

What will happen if an STI is left untreated?

Left untreated, infection can spread to other organs, such as the prostate or cervix, and become more serious infections like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). The inflammation and scarring from these more serious infections can also potentially contribute to infertility. In some women, symptoms may not appear for up to 28 days after infection, while in others symptoms arise almost immediately, so if you're experiencing symptoms it's best to have them checked out by a doctor right away.

How serious is an STI?

It depends on the infection and how long it goes untreated. STIs like trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia can typically be easily cured with a round of antibiotics. However, letting these infections go untreated can lead to complications, and opportunities to pass the infection on to others. Untreated STIs also make it more likely that you will contract other, more serious, infections. For example, trichomoniasis can cause genital inflammation that makes it easier to get infected with HIV, or to pass the HIV virus on to a sex partner.

Blood pressure readings taken within the last year (required for combination birth control pills)
The date of your last menstrual period
