What is an at-home lab test?

An at-home lab test lets you collect your own sample at home, whether that's a swab, a urine sample, or a finger-prick, then mail it to a certified lab in a prepaid envelope. Wisp's at-home health tests cover STIs, vaginal health, HPV, HIV, hormones, gut health, and anemia, and your results are shared securely online 3-5 business days after the lab receives your sample.

Do I need a provider visit to order an at-home lab test?

Accepted Answer

Nope. You can order any Wisp at-home lab test without a provider visit, a referral, or insurance. Pick your kit, check out, done. A provider comes in on the other end if your results call for it. Certain kits include a telemedicine consult so you can ask questions, and if treatment is medically appropriate and can be delivered via telemedicine, a prescription can be sent to your local pharmacy for pickup.

What's the difference between at-home lab tests and in-lab testing?

Mostly, it comes down to who collects the sample. With a lab test at home, you do the collection yourself and ship it out. With in-lab testing, a phlebotomist does it for you. Depending on the test, collection method, and lab, tests can also differ in sensitivity and specificity, or how well they detect a condition when it's present or absent. In-lab testing may also offer reflexive testing, where additional testing is automatically performed based on your initial results. With our at-home test kits, your sample is processed by a CLIA/CAP accredited lab. A walk-in blood draw can be the better option if you need a larger blood sample, you'd rather have a phlebotomist handle it, or a provider has asked for testing that a self-collected sample can't cover, or you need testing or follow-up testing that a self-collected sample can't cover.

How long will my results take?

Your test results will be available online around 3-5 business days after your sample reaches the lab—most patients have their results within a week after shipping back your samples. We work with CLIA and CAP-certified labs across the United States that cover a range of different diagnostic tests.

What happens if I test positive?

Accepted Answer

Your results will be available to view in your Wisp Account Messages. If you receive a positive result, or if you just have questions, the Wisp Care Team will provide a telemedicine consult (usually included in the cost of your test kit) and provide you with guidance on your next steps. If eligible, a prescription can be sent to your local pharmacy for pickup.

What STI prescription treatment does Wisp provide?

We are able to prescribe treatment for the following infections, if it is safe & appropriate: Chlamydia (anal, genital and oral) Gonorrhea (anal and genital) Trichomoniasis Mycoplasma genitalium Mycoplasma hominis HSV-1 and HSV-2 Ureaplasma We are unable to prescribe treatment for the following infections and you will need to seek care from an in-person provider: Gonorrhea in the throat Syphilis HIV HPV These infections require more complex care and treatment than we can handle via telemedicine. Your Wisp Care Team will be able to answer any questions you may have and provide guidance on next steps.

Are at-home lab tests as accurate as tests done in a clinic?

It depends on the test. While your sample may be processed by the same CLIA/CAP accredited labs that process clinic samples, accuracy can vary based on the type of test, the sample being collected, and how it’s collected. For some tests, at-home collection can be a convenient and dependable option. For others, especially certain blood tests, a lab or clinic draw may be better suited to getting the sample needed for accurate results or additional testing. And then there’s the collection itself: an insufficient or improperly collected sample can lead to a false negative or inconclusive result. So before you dive in, read those instructions—future you will be glad you did.

Are at-home lab tests FDA-cleared?

It depends on the specific test. Some at-home health tests and feminine screening kit options use FDA-cleared or FDA-approved assays, while others are laboratory-developed tests run by CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited labs, which are regulated under CLIA rather than cleared individually by the FDA. Both are held to established standards for accuracy and quality. Check the individual product page for details on the test you're ordering, and talk with a provider if you have questions about which is right for you.

How much do at-home lab tests cost?

Wisp’s at-home lab tests are self-pay, and every price is listed upfront. A single home test kit starts at $79 for a single-infection screen and runs up to around $279 for a full gut health panel, with most STI and vaginal health kits landing between $99 and $199. We don't accept or bill insurance, so there's no deductible math and no surprise invoice weeks later.

Do I need to pay an additional cost for treatment?

First things first: treatment is only available for conditions Wisp can treat via telemedicine. If you test positive, your provider will review your results and symptoms (if you have any) to determine whether treatment is appropriate. Some conditions may be treated even if you don't have symptoms, while others may not require or be eligible for treatment when you're asymptomatic. Good news: some kits include the cost of a provider consult if you test positive, so check your kit details to see if yours does. If treatment is appropriate, your prescription can be sent to a local pharmacy of your choosing for pickup. Medication costs are separate from your Wisp care and may vary by pharmacy. You may be able to save with insurance, if available, or our Wisp x GoodRx discount card.

Does Wisp accept HSA or FSA for payment?

Yes, Wisp accepts HSA and FSA payments. During checkout, you will have the option to pay with a credit card, HSA, or FSA card. After your order processes, you will receive a receipt that will have all the necessary information for reimbursement. Most products are HSA / FSA eligible.
