How does HSV testing work?

There are two main ways to test for herpes: swabbing an active outbreak (a viral culture or PCR test) or a blood test (antibody test). Swab tests are considered the most accurate form of HSV testing and result in less false positives. Herpes blood testing without symptoms is generally not recommended by providers or the CDC for a couple reasons:

  • Testing limitations: If a person gets a blood test too soon after an infection, the result could be wrong—after exposure, it can take up to 16 weeks or more for current tests to detect infection. A wrong result is also possible when the person has a low risk of infection.
  • High rate of false positives: False positive test results can happen with many kinds of diagnostic tests, but the chance of a false positive herpes blood test result is much higher than when testing for STIs like chlamydia or gonorrhea.
