Why should I screen for Syphilis?

Syphilis rates in the U.S. are skyrocketing, even as rates for other STIs fall. From 2018 to 2022, reported cases of Syphilis rose 80% in the U.S. If left untreated, Syphilis infection can cause serious heart and brain damage, blindness, deafness, and paralysis, and infections in pregnant people can lead to miscarriage, lifelong medical issues, and infant death. When caught early, Syphilis is curable with the right antibiotics, but treatment may not undo any damage already done by the infection—that’s why it’s so important to test and treat as soon as you can.

All pregnant women should receive Syphilis testing at their first prenatal visit. Some pregnant women need to receive Syphilis testing again during the third trimester at 28 weeks and at delivery.

You may want to test more frequently if you:

  • Are a man who has sex with men
  • Have HIV
  • Are taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention
  • Have partner(s) who have tested positive for Syphilis
  • Are pregnant
  • Have certain risk factors for Syphilis, like living in a community with high rates of Syphilis

Syphilis Blood Test Kit FAQ

Wisp Care Team

Andrea Sleeth, WHNP

Syphilis rates are rising, and most individuals should be tested at least once a year. At-home testing makes early detection easier, which is key to preventing serious complications. While treatment requires an in-person penicillin injection, expanding access to testing is a crucial step toward timely care and stopping the spread.
