Ciprofloxacin is An FDA-approved broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones. Due to its strength and potential side effects, it's typically reserved for complex cases where other antibiotics are ineffective.
Please note: Ciprofloxacin carries a black box warning due to the risk of disabling and potentially permanent side effects of the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system. In line with FDA guidance, we have determined that fluoroquinolones, such as Ciprofloxacin, should be reserved for use in patients with no other treatment options for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), because the risks generally outweigh the benefits. In response to these concerns, we are removing Ciprofloxacin from our treatment protocols for UTIs and will be recommending alternative antibiotics that are both effective and have a better safety profile. Alternative options can be found here.

Overview
Despite our best efforts, UTIs are as common as tanlines. Whenever bacteria passes into the urinary tract it can travel up into the bladder where it wreaks havoc. Common symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, an urgent or frequent need to urinate, urine that appears cloudy, dark, or has an unusual odor, and pain in the lower abdomen. While most UTIs can be effectively treated with a brief course of antibiotics, neglecting to treat them can lead to severe complications. Cipro (Ciprofloxacin) is an antibiotic that can help treat severe UTIs. However, due to its risk profile, it's typically reserved for more complex cases or UTIs that have proven difficult to treat. There are several other alternative medications available that are both highly effective and carry fewer risks, making them safer options for most UTI cases.
