Follow-Up Care
Why should I test for HPV?
HPV is a common virus that can cause genital warts and can lead to cancers later in life. Most people with HPV don’t experience any symptoms, but even in these cases HPV can still cause long-term complications, so it’s important to be screened regularly. Early intervention saves lives! Wisp’s HPV Swab Test screens for HPV 16 and 18—these two high-risk strains account for approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases.
When should I screen?
- Ages 21-29: Pap test every 3 years
- Ages 30-65: HPV test every 5 years or HPV test and Pap test every 5 years
- A positive HPV test or abnormal Pap test requires tailored in-person follow-up care that takes into account your personal health history—the Wisp Care Team can answer questions and help provide guidance!

At-home vaginal HPV testing can identify high-risk strains, including HPV 16 and 18—the types most linked to cervical cancer. While this offers a convenient and important screening option, it doesn’t replace in-person cervical testing, which screens for a broader range of both high- and low-risk HPV strains. Think of this as a helpful spot check—not a substitute for routine cervical care with your provider.
