You take a swab of the affected area, send it to a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab using the prepaid label, and get results online in 3–5 business days. This swab method detects the virus directly, so it’s more reliable than a blood test, especially during an active outbreak.
Blood tests, which look for antibodies, are generally less accurate when you don’t have symptoms. It can take up to 16 weeks after exposure for a blood test to detect herpes, and false positives are more common compared with swab tests.
