How do I diagnose a UTI?

Most UTIs are diagnosed based on typical symptoms but require verification from a licensed medical provider for prescription meds. After experiencing a UTI one or more times, women become pretty good at detecting the early stages of a UTI and can consult a provider quickly enough to prevent the infection from spreading./nTypically, as long as a female patient does not have vaginal irritation or discharge, and shows other common symptoms of UTI, no tests are required to prescribe antibiotics. However, due to the severity of complications that can occur with bodily infections, if a patient has recently (within the last month or so) taken antibiotics and the treatment was not successful, our providers will write a prescription for lab testing in order to identify the bacteria causing the UTI.

Do you prescribe Ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin carries a black box warning due to the risk of disabling and potentially permanent side effects of the tendons, muscles, joints, nerves, and central nervous system. In line with FDA guidance, we have determined that fluoroquinolones, such as Ciprofloxacin, should be reserved for use in patients with no other treatment options for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), because the risks generally outweigh the benefits. In response to these concerns, we are removing Ciprofloxacin from our treatment protocols for UTIs and will be recommending alternative antibiotics that are both effective and have a better safety profile.
