Wisp will ship Levonorgestrel in the mail (to keep on hand), but if you need an emergency contraceptive to take immediately, ella® may be taken for up to 5 days following contraceptive failure.

The longer you wait to take emergency contraception after unprotected sex, the less effective it will be. Levonorgestrel is most effective up to 72 hours (3 days) after, while ella® may be taken up to 120 hours (5 days).

Once a Wisp licensed medical provider reviews your request, if safe and appropriate, your ella® prescription is called into a local pharmacy for pickup and will be ready in as little as 3 hours (when orders are placed during regular operating hours). Levonorgestrel is always available over the counter, and we can ship a dose to your home in 3-5 business days.

Levonorgestrel may be less effective in people with a higher body mass index (BMI of 30 or higher). However, Levonorgestrel is generally considered very effective for individuals under 165 lbs. While Levonorgestrel for overweight individuals may be less effective, prescription Ulipristal (Ella) does not have a BMI limit and is shown to be effective in individuals up to 195 lbs. Taking Ella if overweight is not only more effective at preventing pregnancy, it may be taken up to 5 days following contraceptive failure.

No. The active ingredient in Levonorgestrel is a specific dose intended to prevent pregnancy after contraceptive failure. In birth control, levonorgestrel prevents (or delays ovulation), and disrupts fertilization by stopping the egg from attaching itself to the uterus.

Wisp treats patients 18 - 54 for this area of care. Wisp does not offer hormonal birth control, hormonal cycle control, or emergency contraception to patients over the age of 55. Perimenopausal and menopausal changes during this stage of life can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke, which are better managed with in-person consultations for enhanced safety and personalized care.
