Do Libido Supplements Work?

At some point, most people find themselves in a relationship where your sex drive may not align with your partner’s, whether that’s due to life changes, stress, illness, aging, or simply incompatibility. This situation can be really frustrating, especially when every other part of the relationship seems to be flowing smoothly, so it’s natural that you may start looking into possible solutions. Google will send you straight into the world of supplements, over-the-counter and “natural” options that claim to boost your libido or help you with “performance.” But do these pills actually work? And, are they the answer to your relationship challenges?

What is low libido?

First, let’s start with what it isn’t. Libido doesn’t necessarily describe your performance during sex—for men, “performance” usually means their ability to get or maintain erections, and for women this may look like producing wetness or lubrication. Instead, libido refers to your desire to have sex at all. Every individual will have their own unique baseline for how often they want sex and this baseline will likely change throughout their lives. We all know teenagers and young adults always have sex on the brain, and things tend to balance out as we age. Factors like new medications, menopause, and other health conditions, can also play a role in how often you feel desire. Even where you are in your relationship can play a role—we all know about the “honeymoon stage” of a relationship when you can’t keep your hands off each other, and this stage tends to wane naturally over time.

Low libido is extremely common among people of all genders. About 1 in 6 men report a loss of libido at some point in their lives and more than 1 in 3 women report feelings of low sexual desire. Medically, this concern is called hypoactive sexual desire disorder—a persistent disinterest in sexual activity that negatively affects your overall well-being. It can have both psychological and physical causes, such as:

  • Stress
  • Depression
  • Relationship changes
  • Hormone changes
  • Fatigue
  • Chronic illness
  • Menopause
  • Diabetes
  • Lack of sleep
  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Medication

It can be extremely frustrating to want to want to have sex, especially when you don’t know the specific cause, or the cause is something you can’t do much about. Many people find themselves turning to the Internet for advice and support.

What are libido pills?

If you’ve ever dipped a toe into the supplement industry, you’ll find there are pills for everything and anything. It can be overwhelming! The important thing to remember is that supplements are unregulated. Unlike prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety and efficacy. While they are readily available and easy to purchase, it’s hard to know what you’re actually getting and if those pills will live up to the claims on the label. Libido supplements are an area that can be especially tricky to navigate, simply because of that age-old adage: sex sells. People who are struggling with their sex drive are especially susceptible to marketing because they just want something that will work.

Are libido pills effective?

While research into natural libido boosting ingredients is still inconclusive, there are plenty of studies that show evidence of the beneficial effects of specific ingredients. Our Medical Team curated these ingredients to formulate our Wisp Lift for Her and Wisp Lift for Him—supplements targeted for men and women to optimize hormonal balance and reignite desire. Both formulations include:

  • Zinc
  • Vitamin E
  • Maca Root
  • Fenugreek
  • Korean Ginseng
  • Ginger Root

These ingredients have proven to be beneficial for both men and women in supporting fertility, reproductive health, and hormonal balance to support and maintain a strong sex drive. Notably, we don’t include arginine in our formulation. While arginine has been shown to boost blood flow to the genitals, it also can increase herpes outbreaks in some people. Our formula is herpes-safe!

How do libido pills work for women?

Our Wisp Lift for Her formulation includes Tribulus. Tribulus helps to optimize the hormonal balance in women for a higher sex drive. In one study, 67% of women with very low libidos reported increased sexual desire after taking Tribulus supplements for 90 days. It also seems to be safe and effective for postmenopausal women, an important detail since menopause can seriously mess with your sex drive!

How do libido pills work for men?

We included Ashwagandha in our Wisp Lift for Him formula. Ashwagandha targets testosterone levels, sperm count, and semen quality. In one study, men who took Ashwagandha for 8 weeks found their testosterone levels increased 15% compared to men who took a placebo.

Are there other ways to treat low libido?

Supplements can only play a small role in supporting your overall sex drive, much in the same way taking vitamins can’t replace a balanced diet! It’s important to make other healthy lifestyle changes to give your body the support it needs.

  • Exercise. No one likes to hear it, but regular exercise can relieve stress and provide those endorphins that give your mood a boost.
  • A healthy diet. Choosing fruits and veggies over processed foods will give you more energy (for sex 👀). Excessive alcohol consumption can also lower testosterone levels, so drinking less is a good way to support your libido and give your overall health a boost!
  • Regular sleep. It’s so easy to stay up late scrolling your phone or watching TV—give your eyes and your brain a break before bed to wind down by choosing a book or a craft instead. Developing a sleep schedule is one of the best things you can do for your health and can go a long way towards getting your back on your game.
  • Talk to a professional. If your dip in libido is seriously affecting your mental health, talking to a therapist can help. There may be something you’re missing that a mental health professional can help you sort out to get to the root of your problem. Additionally, if you just aren’t feeling quite right, make an appointment with your doctor—low libido can be a sign of a deeper health concern.

While libido supplements are not a cure-all, they can play a helpful role in supporting your sex drive, along with other lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. Wisp’s Wisp Lift formulas are doctor-approved for safety and efficacy—that means you can feel confident that you know exactly what you’re taking, and that the ingredients are high quality. Wherever you are in your libido journey, Wisp is here to support you!
