You can take antivirals two ways: 1) Just when you feel an outbreak coming (episodic), which is a 5-day treatment, typically Valacyclovir 1 gram, that speeds up recovery and reduces the severity and length of the outbreak, but does not reduce your risk of getting an outbreak nor spreading the virus to your partners and 2) Everyday (suppressive), which can reduce your risk of an outbreak by at least 70-80%, and reduce your risk of spreading the virus to others down to 1% of the time.

Unfortunately, there is no HSV cure at this time. However, depending on the frequency and severity of your outbreaks, antiviral medication can help you live outbreak free. Even without a medically-verified herpes diagnosis, many individuals know they have HSV 2 through the presence of recurring genital sores, i.e. outbreaks. It's common to look for a cream for genital herpes outbreaks, but outbreak prevention is more achievable with oral antiviral medication.

Valacyclovir (aka Valtrex) & Acyclovir (aka Zovirax and Sitavig) are the most effective drugs on the market today for treating cold sores, shingles and genital herpes outbreaks. They are also used to treat chickenpox (VZV).
They are both considered equally effective for preventing outbreaks & the spread of Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 to sexual partners.
The most important thing to preventing an outbreak is time. Within the first 48 hours of feeling the first symptoms in the area you're treating (itchiness, tingling, burning, pain) is recommended.
However, the quicker you take valacyclovir or acyclovir after feeling the first cold sore or genital ulcer symptoms, the less likely you are to experience an outbreak.
Remember, the quicker you take it, the less severe (if at all) the outbreak.
If you feel anything coming on, talk to a doctor to see if valacyclovir or acyclovir are right for you.
