Using a home remedy for genital herpes, especially if you are experiencing your first few outbreaks, may not be as effective as prescription herpes medication. Always take a trusted antiviral medication at the first sign of a Genital Herpes blister./nIf you are experiencing more frequent outbreaks, sometimes a change to the frequency and dosage of your antiviral prescription, i.e. taking a daily suppressive dose, instead of only when symptoms start, will better help you prevent herpes outbreaks altogether.

Valacyclovir (aka Valtrex) & Acyclovir (aka Zovirax and Sitavig) are the most effective drugs on the market today for treating herpes outbreaks./nBoth medications are considered equally effective for preventing outbreaks & the spread of Herpes Simplex 1 & 2 to sexual partners. The most important thing for preventing an outbreak is beginning treatment within 48 hours of feeling the first symptoms in the area you're treating (itchiness, tingling, burning, pain). The quicker you take valacyclovir or acyclovir, the less likely (if at all) you are to experience an outbreak.

Can I take antivirals every day to prevent outbreaks?

Yes! You can take Antivirals two ways: 1) Just when you feel an outbreak coming (episodic), which is a 5-day treatment that speeds up recovery and reduces the severity and length of the outbreak but does not reduce your risk of getting an outbreak nor spreading the virus to your partners, or 2) Everyday (suppressive), which can reduce your risk of an outbreak by at least 70-80%, and reduce your risk of spreading the virus to sexual partners down to 1% of the time. When taking daily antivirals to prevent outbreaks and transmission of Genital Herpes, it is uncommon to build up a tolerance to antivirals.

Can I buy herpes medication over the counter?

There are over-the-counter herpes treatments, but none will be as effective as prescription antivirals.
