Fosfomycin Medication

Application & Dosage

This treatment plan reviews the risks and benefits of the treatment we are recommending. Please make sure to read it and the manufacturer's pamphlet that comes with the medicine. The manufacturer's pamphlet contains full information on potential medication interactions, side effects, and other important information you should know about the medicine before you start.

Instructions

You have stated that you wish to take a medication for your symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection (bladder infection, UTI). The medication you have been prescribed is fosfomycin in which you are to mix one sachet (3g) with 3-4oz of water and take it orally as a single dose. This medication is used to treat the bacterial overgrowth causing your urinary tract infection. There are several causes for UTIs in women and the most common bacteria causing UTIs is E coli.

Signs of this infection include burning with urination, foul-smelling urine without itching or vaginal discharge. You may experience fullness or tenderness of the lower abdomen, more frequent need to use the restroom, urgently needing to use the restroom, or a sensation of being unable to fully empty your bladder. A slight pink or red tinge to the urine can be common, but bleeding is not and should be addressed immediately with an in-person physician.

Allergies

This medicine, like all medications, may cause an allergic reaction if you are allergic to similar medicines or components. If you are allergic to any of the following please do not take the medicine and call or message us or see your doctor in person.

  • Fosfomycin (Monurol)

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Fofsomycin crosses the placental barrier. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal reproduction studies are not always predictive of human response, this drug should not be used during pregnancy. Wisp does not treat pregnant patients on our platform for your safety. If you are pregnant you should see an in person provider for additional monitoring and oversight.

It is not known whether fosfomycin tromethamine is excreted in human milk. Because many drugs are excreted in human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. We recommend alternative UTI antibiotics for breastfeeding mothers offered on our platform.
