What’s the Best Anti-Nausea
Medication for Travel?

Summer might feel like it’s winding down, but our travel plans are starting to heat up! In our books, August–or any time of year–is the perfect time to plan an exciting getaway. But, nothing can ruin a trip faster than a bout of unexpected nausea… or diarrhea. Whether it's from trying new foods, drinking a touch too much, or taking antibiotics for those summertime infections–upset stomachs aren’t welcome here!

But, good news alert: we’ve got an amazing anti-nausea medication that’s a perfect addition to your travel medkit. Zofran, or generic ondansetron, can help keep any travel-induced nausea from spoiling your hard-earned vacation. And, keeping your gut microbiome happy and healthy with probiotics gives your stomach a head start! So, let’s get into the details about taking probiotics and Zofran for travel.

What is Zofran?

Zofran is an FDA-approved medication that’s frequently used to help folks experiencing nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or after a surgical procedure. But, doctors can also prescribe Zofran to help prevent more day-to-day nausea! You can take Zofran to stop vomiting from stomach bugs, food poisoning, or nausea caused by taking certain medications, like antibiotics or hormonal pills like birth control.

Zofran is part of a class of drugs called antiemetics. Antiemetics don’t typically address the underlying cause of nausea–meaning they don’t actually treat your food poisoning, for example–but they help stop you from vomiting so other treatments have time to kick in and start working.

Zofran works as an anti-nausea medication by blocking serotonin–a natural chemical in your body that impacts lots of processes, including digestion. When you take Zofran, it blocks serotonin from reaching the parts of your brain and gut that tell you it’s time to vomit, keeping upset stomachs at bay! Nauseous gang, rejoice. 🙌

Benefits of Zofran for travel

There are plenty of new and exciting things that can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea while you’re out traveling. Let’s look at a few of the scenarios when taking Zofran generic ondansetron–and Equalizing Probiotics–can help!

Dietary changes

We’re all here for adventurous eating and trying new things. But, big changes to your diet can certainly make your stomach uneasy! Whether you’re looking to avoid nausea, diarrhea, or both, Zofran generic and probiotics can help. Probiotics are designed for daily use to keep your gut microbiome full of good bacteria–which has incredible impacts on your overall health. Pack probiotics along with Zofran to prevent any nausea or diarrhea you might get when eating new foods.

Hangovers

We all know the feeling… When you wake up in the morning after having a few too many drinks, taking Zofran can help ease some of the unpleasant nausea. Side note: it’s not safe to take Zofran with alcohol, so plan accordingly!

Antibiotics:

No one wants to get an infection while traveling, but it happens to the best of us! Whether it’s a UTI, BV, or something else, taking generic Zofran can help combat the nausea associated with (very necessary!) antibiotics. Besides nausea, antibiotics can often cause diarrhea and kill off the good bacteria in your gut along with the bad bacteria. Taking probiotics can help keep your gut (and vaginal!) microbiome balanced while taking antibiotics and help prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

Emergency contraception

Psst! Did you hear that Wisp now offers a six-pack of generic Plan B? Talk about a vacation day-saver. Whether you’re taking Plan B or Ella Emergency Contraception, adding in Zofran can prevent any nauseous side effects.

When we tell you that we don’t pack for vacation without probiotics and Zofran generic, we mean it! But, it’s good to know that Zofran doesn’t work for nausea and vomiting from motion sickness. So, if you’re hopping on a boat or doing some reading on a train–ginger and Dramamine are still your best bet.

How often can you take Zofran?

There are a few different Zofran dosages and forms: tablets, oral disintegrating tablets (ODT), or an oral solution. Wisp offers Zofran ODT because it’s fast-acting! These tablets dissolve on your tongue and start working in about 30 minutes, reaching their full effect in about two hours. And even better news: you can take Zofran generic with or without food, so you don’t have to try to eat if your stomach is already feeling queasy. Remember to always take medication as directed by your healthcare provider!

You can order a five-day supply of Zofran from Wisp as a standalone prescription, or as an add-on to other medications.

Is Zofran over the counter?

If you’re already dealing with an upset stomach, you probably want to get some anti-nausea medication into your system ASAP! But, is Zofran over-the-counter? The answer is no. But, don’t worry! Wisp makes it easy to get a prescription for Zofran generic when appropriate, available for same-day pick up at a local pharmacy. Your provider will ensure it’s safe for you to take and your nauseous belly will be settled in no time.

In general, Zofran is a well-tolerated medication, but mild side effects are still possible, including constipation, headache, drowsiness, and diarrhea.

So, if it’s rare to experience side effects, you might be wondering why isn’t Zofran over-the-counter. You need a prescription for ondansetron because a healthcare provider will need to know about your medical history and other medications you’re taking to give you the official OK to take Zofran.

Speak with your healthcare provider before taking Zofran if you have a history of any of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Liver disease
  • Pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Taking SSRIs
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU)
  • Low potassium or magnesium levels
  • Allergic reaction to ondansetron, granisetron, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives

Does Zofran help with diarrhea?

Alright, so we know that Zofran generic is great for fighting nausea, but what about diarrhea? Zofran isn’t typically prescribed for diarrhea specifically. But, one study showed that ondansetron benefited folks with diarrhea caused by irritable bowel syndrome (1). Easing your nausea with Zofran can help with overall discomfort and indigestion, helping with diarrhea.

And, if you’re taking a Zofran dosage only to help with nausea, daily probiotics can help with diarrhea! Probiotics work wonders for your gut and vaginal microbiome, which has incredible impacts on your overall health. Taking Equalizing probiotics along with you while traveling can help keep you regular–and also supports your immune system so you don’t pick up any unfriendly bugs!

Plus, if you get an infection while traveling and get prescribed antibiotics, taking probiotics alongside can help keep your belly happy and stop antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
