How to Treat Fever
Blisters Before
They Fully Develop

There’s no getting around it: fever blisters are unpleasant. They’re painful, they weep fluid, they are very visible to other people, and they are highly contagious when they are active. The good news? There are ways you can help treat your fever blisters before they fully develop, and fever blister medicine has come a long way in the last few years. Fever blisters are a common occurrence amongst people in the general population. Approximately 20% of adults across the country suffer from fever blisters, also known as cold sores, which are caused by the HSV-1 virus. Everybody is vulnerable when it comes to being able to contract them, but not everybody is affected in the same manner. Many people will get a breakout only rarely, while others will get them very often — it all depends on your immune system, and the stressors that affect you.

Fever Blisters

As mentioned above, fever blisters are also known as cold sores, and they are often caused by the HSV-1 virus, also known as Herpes Simplex 1 (although it is possible to have cold sores caused by HSV-2 as well). Herpes Simplex 1 is known as the oral version of the herpes virus (genital herpes being the other form), and it is more common and easier to spread in general. As with any herpes virus, there is no cure for HSV-1, but it is possible to manage symptoms effectively so they don’t disrupt your life. Antivirals and herbal supplements can reduce the likelihood of outbreaks, and when outbreaks do occur, you can treat them by applying fever blister medicine before they can fully develop into open sores.

Fever blisters have a variety of triggers when they appear around your mouth. In most cases, fever blisters are going to be caused by some type of stressor, so if you have herpes, you need to manage your health in order to prevent outbreaks. Better sleep, healthier eating habits, and minimizing stress overall are all excellent ways to avoid fever blisters; but sometimes life is out of your control, and you’ll need a fever blister medicine to treat them before they fully develop.

Fever Blister Oral Medication

The FDA has approved several oral treatments for fever blisters in the last decade, including ones such as Valacyclovir and Acyclovir. These two are fever blister medicine antivirals that are approved by the FDA for treating fever blisters before they can fully develop, or even appear. Speaking with your doctor, you can find out which method of taking these oral prescriptions is best for you: episodic or suppressive. With an episodic treatment plan, you will start to take the medication the moment you feel an outbreak starting; a couple days before an actual visual outbreak, you should feel itching and sensitivity around the area. By taking the medication as the outbreak starts to form, you can prevent an outbreak from fully forming. However, it’s important to know that treating once an outbreak begins does not reduce the chance of spreading it. With a suppressive treatment plan, you take the medication daily; it will give you an 80% reduced risk of an outbreak even occurring and will reduce the spread risk down to as low as 1%.

If you do get an outbreak with open sores, you can still lessen the pain and reduce the length of the outbreak by using topical creams and lidocaine pain creams in addition to fever blister medicine.
