Your Vaginal Health
Travel Essentials

The holiday season is officially upon us, and we couldn’t be more grateful for it! It’s been a longgg year and we all deserve some much-needed rest and relaxation. But, raise your hand if a surprise UTI, yeast infection, or early period has ever reared its pesky little head when you’re finally settling into your time away. 🙋🏽🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏾‍♀️ Sigh, mother nature certainly has a knack for timing.

Nothing gets in the way of feeling festive more than not having the helpful meds you need. So, whether you’ve got a long vacation planned or just a quick weekend jaunt, it’s time to talk travel must-haves! From avoiding nausea to delaying your period, read on to figure out what travel essentials you shouldn’t leave home without.

How to cure nausea while traveling

When you’re traveling for the holidays, it can feel like nausea is lurking around every corner. Eat a little too much turkey? Nausea. Have a hot wings eating contest with your cousins? Nausea. And egg nog? Don’t even get us started…

Luckily, you don’t have to suffer through nausea while traveling–or the unwelcome diarrhea that often comes with it. Zofran (ondansetron) is a powerful prescription medication that helps prevent nausea and vomiting by blocking signals from reaching your brain and gut that tell you it’s time to get sick (1). Zofran takes as little as 30 minutes to start working, reaching its full effect after about two hours. You can take Zofran to treat nausea from:

  • Indigestion
  • Hangovers
  • Antibiotics
  • GLP-1s
  • IBS/IBD
  • Migraines
  • Stomach bugs
  • Medication side effects
  • Menstrual cycle nausea

We’ve got no patience for feeling nauseous while on vacation, which makes Zofran a top pick on our list of travel must-haves! Remember: going about your day when your belly is hurting is very brave. But with Zofran, it’s also unnecessary.

Can you delay your period while traveling?

The menstrual cycle is a beautiful and natural thing. But it can also be really annoying, painful, and emotionally draining. And being on your period while on vacation? Sorry, we’d rather fill our suitcases with things other than a week’s worth of tampons (NASA says we need 100).

So, whether your holiday plans include a beach getaway or a cozy get-together, it’s natural to wonder if you can delay your period while traveling. And the good news is: yes, you totally can!

The Period Delay Pill, sometimes called the honeymoon pill, contains a type of progesterone called Norethindrone Acetate. It works by keeping your progesterone elevated so your uterine lining stays intact–rather than shedding and causing your period. Here’s how to use it to delay your period:

  • Start taking Norethindrone three days before your period is due
  • Take one tablet three times a day with either 10- or 20-day options available
  • Your period will start two to four days after you stop taking Norethindrone

There you have it! With a prescription for Norethindrone, you can safely and effectively delay your period until the holidays are over–or up to 20 days. It’s important to know that the honeymoon pill is not a form of birth control. Meaning, condoms definitely still make it onto our travel essentials list, too.

Similar to birth control, the most common side effect of any hormonal medication is sun sensitivity. Be sure to take breaks from direct sun exposure and wear SPF 50 sunscreen. You may also experience some side effects like lower mood, fluid retention, or mild acne. When your period starts a few days after you've finished treatment, you may notice in changes in your menstrual flow, duration, and timing. Everyone responds differently to changes in their hormone cycle so you may experience all of these side effects, or none at all! The only way to know exactly how any medication will affect you is to experience it for yourself.

Travel-sized UTI prevention

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) just love to show up at the most inconvenient times. And, there are all kinds of ways bacteria can make their way into your urinary tract and cause an infection while traveling. Holding in your pee on long drives, getting cramped and clammy on plane rides, or vacation hook-ups, just to name a few.

So, if you know you’re susceptible to UTIs or expect you’ll be engaging in UTI-causing behavior, it’s best to plan ahead! Our Urinary Tract Duo will help you keep UTIs from ruining your time off–and it will be worth the space in your away bag, we promise. The Urinary Tract Duo includes:

  • Urinary Tract Cleansing Mix: Seriously, it’s one of our absolute best travel items. This drink mix is packed with UTI-fighting ingredients like D-mannose and cranberry fruit extract. Plus, these drink mixes come in travel-friendly sachets and taste like lemonade. Just be sure not to pair this drink mix with a D-mannose supplement to avoid elevated D-mannose dosing.
  • Daily Urinary Tract Support Capsules: These capsules help fight against recurrent UTIs and uncomfortable symptoms. Traveling or not, these capsules are especially great if you experience three or more UTIs per year.

Take these capsules daily and a drink mix after a potential UTI trigger to help stay healthy on vacation! And if you do end up with a UTI this holiday season, we’ve got antibiotics for that, too.

Fight digestive irregularity while traveling

Taking care of your body over the holidays is a tough order. Exercising and eating a perfectly balanced diet might not be on your vacation to-do list. Add in some travel and you might be bound for gastrointestinal upset and irregularity. 😵‍💫

But, you can do something to help keep your gut happy and regular while traveling–support your gut microbiome with probiotics. Taking probiotics may help with gut balance, healthy digestion, and even your immune system (2).

And, the benefits of probiotics don’t stop at your gut! They also help you with your vaginal microbiome. You have a whole world of bacteria inside your vagina–we’re talking almost 600 species of bacteria (3). So, it’s important to make sure the good bacteria outnumber the bad!

Lactobacilli are good bacteria, and they work hard to fight inflammation and lower your risk of infection. Giving lactobacilli a helping hand with probiotics is easy–whether you’re on vacation or not! Wisp Equalizing Probiotics are an absolute travel essential for your vaginal health.

Avoid common vaginal infections

Did you know that between 30 and 50 percent of women will have a yeast infection during their lives (4)? And 30 percent will get bacterial vaginosis (BV) (5)? We don’t love those numbers, and we definitely don’t love vaginal infections–especially not while on vacation. Luckily, there’s a way to help keep your holidays free from BV and yeast!

Boric acid suppositories can be a great way to help prevent uncomfortable vaginal symptoms. Maintaining vaginal acidity helps stop the overgrowth of bad, infection-causing bacteria.

Using boric acid suppositories right after sex or on the last day of your period will help keep you fresh, balanced, and infection-free!

What to pack to be prepared

Deciding what to pack for vacation definitely depends on where you’re headed and what activities you have planned. After all, your health needs will probably be different for a holiday get-together with friends and family than for a romantic beach getaway! That said, here’s a quick recap and list of recommendations:

Pop these travel must-haves into a pill box or some cute travel-sized containers and you’ll be ready for anything! Being prepared isn’t just for Boy Scouts. 🫡
